In the past month alone, 6 books have been banned statewide:
-
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
-
A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin
-
A Stolen Life: A Memoir by Jaycee Dugard
-
People Kill People by Ellen Hopkins
-
The Haters by Jesse Andrews
-
Life Is Funny by E.R. Frank
These removals bring the total number of books banned statewide to 34.
We now have a narrow window - just 30 days and counting - to urge the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) to overturn these bans and restore local control.
Before any statewide ban is finalized, USBE board members have the authority to reverse it. This is our opportunity to act.
The current sensitive materials law has not removed obscene content from schools. Instead, it has removed meaningful, widely respected books, many of them written by female authors, that help students navigate complex realities like first love, trauma, and mental health.
Local school boards are better equipped to make these decisions. They operate transparently, engage directly with parents, and reflect the values of their communities. Statewide bans override that process and silence important voices.
The clock is ticking! We need you to act today.
Please contact USBE board members and ask them to:
- Overturn the recent statewide book bans
- Restore decision-making power to local school boards
This effort matters. These decisions impact what students can read, learn, and relate to in their own schools.
We will win this, but only if we keep pushing.
Thank you for taking action.
